This past Saturday, I had the absolute joy of spending the afternoon at La Marqueta in Spanish Harlem, and I have to say… it felt like I was transported straight to Puerto Rico. The atmosphere was alive with music, dance, and community, creating the kind of vibrant energy that makes you smile from the inside out. I smiled so much that my cheeks still hurt from smiling…lol.
What makes it even more special is that this outdoor celebration is happening every Saturday until October 18th, thanks to the one and only Raymond Perez aka DJ Agujita, who not only spins the music but also runs the entire event. With the generous sponsorship of Local Councilwoman Diana Ayala & The Acacia Network, La Marqueta Salsa Saturdays have truly become a cultural gem for the community.
The highlight of the day was the live performance by Yotoco, a phenomenal Latin band blending folkloric Puerto Rican cuatro with the irresistible rhythms of son, salsa, cumbia, bomba and plena. The music was so rich, so full of soul, that it pulled everyone to their feet. Dancing in the open air with neighbors and strangers alike, I felt the magic of the Caribbean right here in New York City.
La Marqueta Salsa Saturdays are more than just an event… they’re a reminder of the traditions, joy, and community that music and dance bring to our lives. If you’re looking for that authentic Puerto Rican spirit in the heart of NYC, this is the place to be.
So mark your calendar and don’t miss it because for a few hours every Saturday, Spanish Harlem truly becomes Puerto Rico. 🌺🎶💃🏽
